Newcastle’s Upcoming Clash: A Test of Defensive Resilience and Attacking Flair

Updated: Mar 18, 2023

As Newcastle United prepare to take on Manchester City in their next fixture, the Magpies will be hoping to continue the impressive form that has seen them rise to fifth place in the Premier League table with two games in hand. Eddie Howe's side has had an excellent season so far, with a solid defensive record and a good balance of attacking options.

Newcastle's next five fixtures are an interesting mix of teams, ranging from top-four contenders to relegation battlers. After their game against Manchester City, they will face Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, and West Ham United. Each of these fixtures presents a different challenge, and Newcastle will need to be at their best if they want to come away with a positive result.

The game against Manchester City is undoubtedly the toughest fixture of the bunch. The Citizens have been in excellent form this season and currently sit in second place on the table with a five-point gap under first-placed Arsenal. Pep Guardiola's side has been dominant in both defense and attack, with a league-high 64 goals scored and just 25 conceded.

Despite the odds being against them, Newcastle will be hoping to cause an upset at the Etihad Stadium. The Magpies have a solid defensive record this season, with just 15 goals conceded in 23 matches. They have also kept 12 clean sheets, the joint-most in the league alongside Manchester City. If they can maintain their defensive solidity and catch City on the counter-attack, they may be able to snatch a surprise result.

However, it will be a tough ask for Newcastle, particularly given City's recent form. The Citizens have won 6 of their last ten league games in a row, and have not conceded only 5 goals in their last six. They have a wealth of attacking options, with the likes of Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez, and Phil Foden all in excellent form. Newcastle's defense will need to be at their very best if they are to keep them at bay.

After their game against City, Newcastle will face a run of fixtures against teams in the bottom half of the table. First up is a home game against Wolves, who are currently fifteenth on the table with just 24 points from 25 matches. On paper, this should be a straightforward win for Newcastle, but as we know, anything can happen in the Premier League. Wolves have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks and will be desperate to pick up points in their battle against relegation.

Next up is a trip to Villa Park to face Nottingham Forest, who has been one of the surprise packages of the season so far. Steve Cooper's side has been in satisfactory form and currently sits in thirteenth place in the table with 25 points. They have some dangerous attacking players, including Brennan Johnson and Morgan Gibbs-White, and will be a tough test for Newcastle. However, if the Magpies can maintain their defensive solidity and take their chances when they come, they‘ll come away with a positive result.

The following fixture is a home game against Manchester United, who are currently third in the top half of the table.  Manchester United has been solid defensively this season, keeping 10 clean sheets. With a well-organized defense and the ability to hit their opponents on the counter-attack, Manchester United could potentially cause an upset.

However, Manchester United will face a daunting task against a formidable Newcastle side that has been in excellent form recently. Manchester City has won 7 of their last ten league matches, keeping 5 clean sheets. They possess an array of attacking talent, including the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony, and Jadon Sancho, who are all in fantastic form. Newcastle's defense will need to be in top form to stop Manchester United's attacking prowess.

The final fixture of this run is a trip to London to face West Ham United. The Hammers have been solid this season and currently sit in 16th place in the table with 23 points. They have a number of talented players, including Jarrod Bowen and Danny Ings, and will be a tough test for Newcastle. However, if the Magpies can maintain their defensive solidity and take advantage of any opportunities that arise, they may be able to come away with a positive result.

Overall, Newcastle United faces an interesting and varied set of fixtures in the coming weeks. Their game against Manchester City and Man United are undoubtedly the toughest of the bunch, but if they can maintain their defensive solidity and catch their opponents on the counter-attack, they may be able to cause an upset. The game against Nottingham Forest presents opportunities for Newcastle to pick up crucial points, while the fixtures against Wolves and West Ham will be tougher tests.

As the season enters its final stretch, Newcastle will be hoping to continue their excellent form and secure a top-4 finish in the table. With a solid defensive record and a good balance of attacking options, they have the tools to achieve this goal. However, they will need to be at their very best in each of their upcoming fixtures if they want to come away with positive results.
