Reviving Liverpool's Season: Key Steps to a Top-Four Finish

Updated: Mar 18, 2023

Liverpool's disappointing start to the season has been the talk of the town, as the Premier League champions have found themselves struggling to keep pace with the league's leading clubs. However, the 2022/23 transfer windows has given the Reds a much-needed boost, with the arrival of several new signings that could help them mount a late charge for a top-four finish.

The signing of Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo has added pace and creativity to Liverpool's attack, which has struggled to find the back of the net consistently this season. Nunez, who arrived from Benfica, is a dynamic striker who can play on either wing, while Gakpo, who joined from PSV Eindhoven, is a versatile forward who can play as a winger or central striker.

The injury to Luiz Diaz is a setback for Liverpool's midfield, as the Colombian international had been in fine form prior to his injury. Diaz is a dynamic and versatile player, capable of playing in a number of positions across midfield and attack. His ability to dribble past defenders, create chances for his teammates, and score goals made him an important player for Liverpool this season. The team will miss his pace, creativity, and work rate, which were key factors in their attacking play. However, Liverpool have added depth to their midfield with the acquisition of Thiago from Bayern Munich, and Klopp will need to look to his other players to step up and fill the void left by Diaz's absence.

Though I, the departure of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich was a significant blow, as the Senegalese forward has been a key player for Liverpool in recent seasons. Mane's goalscoring ability and attacking threat will be sorely missed, and Liverpool will need to find a way to replace his contribution to the team.

So, how can Liverpool make it to the top four before the end of the season? Here are some key steps that they can take:

Maximise the potential of their new signings

Liverpool's new signings have added depth and quality to the squad, but they will need time to settle in and adapt to the team's playing style. Klopp will need to work closely with his coaching staff to integrate the new players into the squad and identify their strengths and weaknesses. This may involve experimenting with different formations or tactics to get the best out of each player.

For instance, Klopp may opt to use Nunez as a central striker alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, or he may use him as a winger to stretch the opposition's defence. Gakpo, on the other hand, could be deployed as a wide midfielder in Klopp's 4-3-3 formation, or as a striker in a 4-4-2 setup.

Improve their defensive solidity

Liverpool's defence has been shaky this season, conceding 30 goals this seasonx. With a new-look attack, it will be even more important to tighten up at the back and reduce the number of goals they are conceding. This could involve making changes to the backline, signing a new defender, or simply improving communication and coordination among the existing players.

One option could be to move Fabinho back into defence, where he has played effectively in the past, and partner him with Joel Matip or Virgil van Dijk.

With the addition of Ibrahima Konate to Liverpool's defence, Jurgen Klopp has more options when it comes to selecting his starting lineup. Konate is a strong, athletic defender who is comfortable playing in a high defensive line, making him a good fit for Klopp's preferred style of play.

Alternatively, Fabinho, Nat Phillips, and Rhys Williams also available, Klopp has plenty of options to choose from and can rotate his defence to keep his players fresh throughout the season.

Be consistent against lower-ranked teams

Liverpool have dropped points against lower-ranked teams this season, which has cost them dearly in the league table. They will need to show more consistency in these matches and avoid complacency if they are to make a serious challenge for a top-four finish.

One way to achieve this could be to rotate the squad more effectively, giving fringe players like Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Fabio Carvalho more game time against weaker opposition. This would not only help to keep the squad fresh but also give these players a chance to prove their worth and contribute to the team.
